DISCOVER OUR STORY
The Staveley Arms is located in the historic village of North Stainley, North Yorkshire.
Parts of the pub date back to the 1600s when it served the route and village through Wensleydale “over the top” to Kendal in the Lake District. The pub pays homage to this bygone era.
The chef team led by Dave Mathews takes great pride in producing dishes which reflect the Yorkshire heritage as well as being contemporary. The Staveley Arms is one of the best pubs in Yorkshire, and has for a long time been known as one of the best pubs in the Yorkshire Dales.
The award-winning Staveley Arms team formerly ran The Bruce Arms in West Tanfield. They are a family pub team, with Dave’s wife Maggie and daughter Rose running front of house. Rose’s fiancé Jack trained as an apprentice under Dave and is now sous chef.
The Staveley Arms is owned by North Stainley Estate, one of the oldest and most diverse farming estates in the country. Despite the impact of the pandemic, the Estate was hugely enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with such a gifted and caring family. Not only has a brilliant family found a perfect new home, but NSE has finally found a team that matches its own core values, particularly around the importance of the customers, the local community and ultimately taking a sustainable approach. These values are echoed around everything the Estate does.
